The Heart of the Intaglio Studio
Printmaking Etching Press Machine
Precision Engineered for Deep Impressions
The etching press is the most critical piece of equipment for any intaglio printmaker. Unlike a relief press, an etching press features a heavy, precision-ground steel bed and large, geared rollers that generate immense, even pressure. This pressure forces dampened paper into the ink-filled recessed lines of an etched plate, transferring the image with crisp clarity and three-dimensional depth. A quality press ensures consistent results, from delicate drypoint lines to deeply embossed aquatint passages.
"Essential Intaglio Equipment for the Professional Workshop."
Standard Features
Precision-Ground Steel Bed, the press bed must be machined flat to within tight tolerances. This ensures even pressure across the entire plate, preventing patchy inking or incomplete image transfer. Cast Iron Rollers, the top and bottom rollers are the heart of the press. Standard construction uses solid, machined steel or high-grade cast iron with a polished surface. Micro-Adjustable Pressure Knobs, both top and bottom roller pressure should be independently adjustable. Standard presses include threaded pressure knobs or bolts at each corner, allowing fine-tuning of the gap and pressure distribution across the roller width.
Printing Application
Traditional Line Work, a stiff, oil-based black ink is forced into the incised lines of the plate using a stiff brush or rolled on with a soft rubber roller. The surface is then wiped with tarlatan and muslin, leaving ink only in the recessed grooves. The plate is printed on dampened, high-quality rag paper through an etching press. This application produces crisp, dark lines with a characteristic embossed plate mark, ideal for etchings, engravings, and drypoints.
Multi-Color Inking, a color printing application where multiple colored inks are carefully dabbed onto different areas of a single plate. Each color is applied to specific etched or engraved regions without mixing. The plate receives a single pass through the press, transferring multiple colors simultaneously. This technique requires meticulous registration and is used for small, expressive editions where each print may vary in color placement.
Inkless Application, a pure textural application using no ink at all. A plate with deep, recessed textures is run through the press with dampened paper but no ink. The pressure forces paper into the recesses, creating a raised, three-dimensional relief on the paper surface. Blind embossing is often combined with printed intaglio images as a border element, a signature mark, or a standalone sculptural paper work.
